This is a serious problem for the 25th largest city in America. Most of Nashville’s waste comes from commercial buildings. Construction and demolition waste has nearly doubled since 2008, during the real estate boom. Overall, Nashville’s “municipal solid waste,” which excludes construction and demolition, had 76% heading to landfills, 18% recycled and 6% composted.
Drilling into the numbers, the report identifies some areas for improvement. It estimates that 87% of all residential waste, and 99% of all construction/demolition debris, was sent to landfills.
