en years ago, New Mexico was recycling seven percent of its garbage. Now the state is at 16 percent — still far behind the national average of 34 percent. But in all fairness, many parts of the country are new to recycling and the program in Albuquerque started as late as 2011.

Like most cities, lack of education and contamination of municipal trash and recycling streams are amongst the biggest challenges. However, If New Mexico grows from its current 16 percent recycling rate to the national average of 34 percent, an NMRC study shows the state would see almost 9,400 new direct and indirect jobs. The South-Central Solid Waste Authority believes with the creation of the new Rio Grande Recycling Corridor that growth is possible.

Bramidan is working with local leaders and a sparse network of equipment providers to improve the rates amongst commercial buildings who enjoy low dumping rates and very little negative consequences for non-participation. With a little effort, Albuquerque, as the 32nd largest city in America can change its colors from red to green.
