HOTELS & RESORTS - MARRIOTT MAUI WAILEA BEACH RESORT

Maui, Hawaii; Premier beach resort adopts a Cardboard baler and dubs it 'Bumble Bee'

Marriott’s Wailea Beach Resort on the Hawaiian island of Maui is a stunning place to vacation. With top notch views, beautiful accommodations and award-winning service it is considered one of Marriott’s premiere properties. Nestled between two of Maui’s best beaches, the resort offers three distinct pool experiences spanning 22 acres, including the longest resort waterslide in Hawaii.

That type of premium offering draws thousands of guests and all of the waste and recycling it takes to serve those guests. The task of managing that falls to Rob Hoonan and his team. When Rob’s 20 old baler finally gave out, Rob looked to Bramidan.

The X6030 was the perfect solution, and staff dubbed it “BumbleBee”

The engineering and service staff loved the Bramidan X6030 baler's look and feel. “It looks like a transformer one staff member said.” So Bumble Bee was the official nickname given this transformative machine. We think of it as a hero in some ways commented Bramidan’s lead tech Alejandro Gallardo who flew from HQ in Addison Illinois to install the baler. It is kind of futuristic with all its on-board technology and sleek design. “It is beautiful”, Rob emailed, “we love it.”

Not easy, but a great choice

Getting nearly anything to the islands is not easy. Once here, the transport, and the trip through the underbelly of the hotel past lots of pipes, vents, ducts and other obstacles in the ceiling makes any equipment install a challenge. Alejandro had to pull the baler on a pallet jack “quite a ways” as he puts it. But it all fit perfectly – sometimes with only centimeters to spare.

For the hotel and for Rob, the baler choice was not easy. Rob had described the difficulty in the early stages of research because they had had their old baler for so long, it was all they knew. People don’t like change Rob noted. But the Bramidan offered so many features that were desired, like BRA-IN monitoring system, they took the chance and are glad they did.

Good for island settings

One of the features of the Bramidan machines is that they are powder coated making them particularly suited to island life and the damp conditions mixed with sea air. The IOT offerings were also very appealing since the baler could be monitored remotely as well as bales being mapped and communication to management when bales were made. This allowed the hotel to provide useful data when comparing to the hauler/recycler’s invoices and see offsets to costs for cardboard and other commodity recyclable materials.

Communication is vital and when a machine offers communication that makes it all the better. With such a sprawling property, staff and management are kept in the loop for bales as well as maintenance schedules and operational life-cycles.

Safety is always a priority

With all companies, especially public facing ones like hotels, safety is a top priority. The Pre-load wire system, the multiple and redundant electronic safety systems, the enclosed chamber, the wire tubes and operational features such as the swing door and lock out tag out functions were all key in the Bramidan choice. It is very easy to use, commented staff as Alejandro demoed the use and finally the ejection of a bale before returning to the mainland.

Thank you also John … the baler is beautiful. We’ve named it “Bumble Bee”. Thank you both for your assistance with this. The install was done on time and looks great. We are very happy.
